Scientific Study About Limiting Beliefs

Have you ever been influenced by the opinions of others? Have you ever accepted something as being true without ever testing it if it was true? Do you feel like sometimes you get stuck because you have limiting beliefs?

Here’s the reason we have limiting beliefs

There was a scientific study made on monkeys. A group of scientists put 5 monkeys in a cage. In the middle of the cage, they put a ladder that led to some hanging bananas. When a monkey climbed the ladder to grab some bananas, scientists would throw cold water on the monkeys that stayed on the ground.

After some time, when a monkey would try to climb the ladder, others didn’t let it because they feared getting cold water thrown on them. After even more time all the monkeys quit trying to climb the ladder despite the desire they had to eat some delicious bananas.

Then, the scientists replaced one monkey from the group. The first thing the new monkey did was to climb the ladder to grab some bananas. But the others pulled the new monkey down and beat it up. After a few beatings, no monkeys would even dare to try to climb the ladder.

The scientists replaced a second monkey and the same thing happened. The others, including the new monkey, beat it up. A third monkey was replaced and the same scenario repeated. Then the fourth and the fifth monkey were replaced. Now there was an entire new group of monkeys that despite the fact that they never got cold water thrown on them, they continued to beat up the monkeys that would try to get the bananas.

If you could ask the monkeys why they did what they did I’m sure they would tell you: “I don’t know why, it’s just the way things are around here”.

What belief do you take to be true just because others told you so?
